Ancient Ruins of Xunantunich

Mayan ruins can be found all over this tropical oasis. One of the most mystifying sites to see in Belize, is in the city of San Ignacio - the Mayan site of Xunantunich. It has been said that Xunantunich is the longest established archeological site of Mayan ruins. This site is set right on the crystal green water of the Mopan River and boats that are motorized by hand can take visitors across the river to see the incredible infrastructure.

Situated a skip away from Guatemala, you are still located in the Cayo District of Belize. Until the discovery of Canaa located in Caracol, Xunantunich held the title of the tallest man-made structure in all of Belize. El Castillo stands one-hundred and thirty feet high above the Plaza and allows for an incredible panoramic view. If history is something that you cannot get enough of, we highly suggest getting a glimpse of this city that has been frozen in time.
